"My favourite places on earth
are the wild waterways where
the forest opens its arms and
a silver curve of river folds
the traveller into its embrace."
Rory MacLean
Rewilding
Like any other word or concept, there are simple ways of defining rewilding and there are also more descriptive ways. No matter how it is defined,
it is most certainly a remarkable part of
nature advocacy.
The Cambridge Dictionary simply defines rewilding as
the process of protecting an environment
and returning it to its natural state.
Rewilding Europe describes it more fully as
a progressive approach to conservation. It’s about letting nature take care of itself, enabling natural processes to shape land and sea, repair damaged ecosystems and restore degraded landscapes. Through rewilding, wildlife’s natural rhythms create wilder, more biodiverse habitats.

No matter how it is defined, rewilding is a truly wonderful concept. It is essentially yet another way we are trying to undo the damage that has been done by humans for many, many years.
And I could attempt to give a lengthy explanation of what rewilding is, but I am afraid I would not do this amazing concept justice at all.
However, The Wildlands Conservancy explains it
so perfectly and concisely:
Rewilding is the process of
returning ecosystems to their natural state by allowing nature to take its course. This conservation strategy involves reintroducing species that
were previously driven out by human activities, restoring natural habitats,
and reducing human interference.
By doing so, ecosystems can regain
their balance, leading to increased biodiversity, healthier habitats,
and a more resilient natural world."
By restoring an ecosystem or an environment to
its natural state and then letting nature take care of itself, we are undoing so many years of damage and abuse. In turn, we are also taking care
of ourselves and creating a more beautiful world for future generations.

“To restore stability to our planet, we must restore its biodiversity, the very thing that
we’ve removed. It’s the only way out of this crisis we’ve created – we must rewild the world.”
Sir David Attenborough
